What are VLANs?

Even if we talk about an infrastructure based on Windows or Linux, Cisco etc. the best manner to separate network traffic of different departments' or to divide it by network devices will be represented by VLANs.

What are VLANs? VLAN stands for Virtual Local Area Network. Basically it is a virtual LAN that behaves like a real one. This will allow network engineers to improve network stability, have a better control upon it and manage departments' individual traffic.

For example, on Windows Server, first step to separate wireless network devices' traffic from physical network devices' is to configure VLANs. In the second step you have to configure DHCP(Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) Scopes for your subnets.

Thus your traffic will be organised. From this point you can block, restrict or allow access to network resources for a specific VLAN.
